Thanks to some assistance from the public authorities in North Port have identified and arrested a suspect in connection with Monday's burglary at a local car wash.
Surveillance pictures of the crime were released to the media on Friday triggering some tips on the perpetrator.
Tommy Eugene Chapman is facing one count of burglary of an unoccupied structure and one count of petit larceny. He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail where he is being held on a bond of $8,000.
According to a North Port Police Department report officers responded to the DJ Car Wash in the 14000 block of Tamiami Trail on Monday in response to a burglary call. Owners of the business say $200 in cash was stolen from the office.
Surveillance cameras show a black male with a thin build and short cropped hair gaining access to the office. Detectives received information identifying Chapman, 38, as the suspect.
They located him at a North Port address where he was taken into custody without incident.
Chapman is no stranger to law enforcement with an arrest record that includes three stints in the state prison system. The suspect has been convicted on a variety of charges including grand theft, burglary and dealing in stolen property.
