A 13-year-old mother is facing murder charges after the death of her new born child. The baby was found in the woods behind the girl's Mableton apartment. Authorities are calling the case disturbing.
Cobb police found the dead infant, which they say had been carried to term, inside a shoe box hidden under some leaves in the woods behind the Sierra Forest Apartments on Wednesday night.
Authorities in Cobb County say a number of children who attend middle school with the teen knew she was pregnant, and knew what happened to the baby.
"A number of youths who knew about this, as well as other kids in the school, that this was widely known in school and it wasn't until after the fact of the infant being born and its subsequent death that this began to surface more and more," said Sgt. Dana Pierce of the Cobb County Police Department.
Pierce said the teen woke up and apparently found the infant dead on Tuesday morning.
"From Tuesday into Wednesday afternoon, there were several juveniles, several youth who were involved, knew what was going on. And ultimately the infant was put into a shoebox and it was placed under some leaves in the back part of the complex," said Pierce.
Police say it wasn't until Wednesday when they got the call.
"What happened was one of those youths involved went, the next day, to school authorities and because of being distraught and understandably upset, he reported that immediately to school authorities. They contacted school police. School police notified Cobb County police," Pierce said.
The 13-year-old made her first court appearance on Friday morning, and was denied bond. She's being charged as an adult and is facing adult counts of felony murder, first-degree child cruelty and concealing a death.
Authorities said the charges the girl faces could change depending on what the medical examiner finds.
A neighbor who didn't want to be identified says her children go to middle school with the mother and 14-year-old father. The woman says kids in the community told her that the teen knew about the pregnancy, but that the girl's parents did not, saying the young teen was afraid to tell her parents.
