Interim leader of Ga. juvenile facility suspended

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - The interim director of a juvenile detention facility in Augusta has been suspended with pay about six weeks after he took over.

Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice spokesman Jim Shuler tells The Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/QWEdqx) that Augusta Youth Development Campus Interim Director Melvin Womble was suspended with pay. Shuler says the suspension is due to a pending Juvenile Justice investigation at the facility, but details weren't released.

Authorities say a corrections lieutenant at the facility has also been terminated in connection with a Dec. 2 assault between two youths that sent a 15-year-old to a hospital.

The Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice on Oct. 31 announced the resignation of former director Ronald Brawner and Womble's appointment as interim director.
