TARPON SPRINGS (FOX 13) -

Police say a homeless man attacked another with an ax handle Wednesday afternoon at a Tarpon Springs convenience store.

Brian Kennedy was sitting on the sidewalk in front of the EZ Stop and Shop on Walton Avenue when James Knott allegedly walked up and attacked him from behind.

"It sounded like someone was beating a tree with a stick and then somebody yelled and I turned around and some gentlemen was beating a guy with a stick from what I could see from there," said Marcus Tucker, who intervened. "Once I apprehended him, it looked like a shovel handle or something like that."

Tucker caught the suspect near the back of Florida Bank and held him to the ground until police arrived. Knott allegedly confessed to the crime.

Police have not said why he attacked the other man. Kennedy is in the hospital, but is expected to recover.
