A piece of the steel spire hoisted to the top of 1 WTC.
MYFOXNY.COM -
Workers began hoisting the pieces on Wednesday that will make up the 408-foot steel spire at the top of 1 World Trade Center.
The process was expected to take about 30 minutes.
Nine pieces each weighing approximately 70 tons arrived on a barge at Pier 25 in Lower Manhattan on Tuesday.
The barge traveled across New York Harbor from New Jersey's Port Newark.
Workers on the 104-story skyscraper had been busy pouring concrete that will hold the spire.
The trade center's director of construction, Steven Plate, said the spire marks a post 9/11 milestone that signifies New York City is "better than ever."
On Sept. 11, 2001, the World Trade Center became the site of the worst terror attack in American history.
Plate said the 1,776-foot high-rise -- symbolizing America's freedom -- will be the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
The spire is expected to rise into the Manhattan sky by spring.
