The wife of a Holly Springs police officer injured in a Texas parade continues to recover.
Four wounded veterans died when a train slammed into their parade float in Midland last month. Sixteen others were injured, including the couple from Holly Springs.
Officials say the driver involved in the deadly train wreck in Texas will not be charged.
Meg Ladner lost her left leg when a train slammed into the float that she was on with her husband, Holly Springs Police Officer Shane Ladner. She underwent a marathon surgery to begin the repair work on her pelvis, and hip last week.
It's just the first part of what's expected to be a grueling recovery process.
"She said to me earlier, 'I can't wrap my mind around what happened.' And I said, 'None of us can,'" said Susan Greene, a friend of the family.
Greene says in three weeks' time, her best friend has already made it out of intensive care.
"Lot of progress, but there's so much more to go," Greene said.
Shane Ladner was also hurt. He suffered back injuries in the accident, but has postponed his own treatment to stay by his wife's hospital bed.
"We were not born sisters but by the grace of God we're sisters. And I'm so thankful she's here with us," Greene said.
Greene says the couple's story has brought thousands of prayers and donations for Meg's future needs.
A fundraiser is scheduled on Saturday morning to help ease the burden for the Ladners. The Longhorn Steakhouse in Kennesaw steakhouse will 'flip' into a pancake house to help raise money for the Ladners' future needs.
The fundraiser will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Longhorn Steakhouse located on 2700 Town Center Drive in Kennesaw. For more information, click here to visit their Facebook page
