How to participate in Georgia Gives Day on Thursday

ATLANTA -

A group of seemingly random people coming together to focus on a single purpose is the basic definition of a flash mob. From prison inmates dancing in unison to a Michael Jackson song to a group of people freezing in place in Grand Central Station, flash mobs can be very fascinating events to watch.

However, Georgia non-profit groups are asking you to participate in a special one. It's called Georgia Gives Day. The idea is to see how many people can engage with non-profit organizations in a 24-hour period.

Thursday, Georgians can log onto gagivesday.org and in flash mob-style, give a gift to a non-profit group for which they all care. Those not sure about which organization they should choose to help can search a database of more than 1,300 non-profit groups by topic and zip code.

FOX 5's Tacoma Perry spoke with staff and volunteers with the Center for the Visually Impaired, just one of the organizations hoping to benefit from Georgia Gives Day. They said that nearly two-thirds of their budget is provided by individuals. The money goes to help those with visual impairments learn to live their daily lives more effectively as well as communication through computers and braille.

Other state have held similar "give days" in the past. Colorado just set a record with their day raising more than $15 million in one day.

For decades, Atlantans have woken up to Tom Sullivan on their radios.  But you might not know that he's also somewhat of an expert eBay seller, and he's got quite a story to tell.

They say the third time's a charm, and that's certainly the case for Candice Glover.  A third try on American Idol was just what she needed, and on Thursday night she was crowned the season 12 champ.
