Wildlife experts helped restock the Chattahoochee River with brown and rainbow trout near Cochran Shoals on Tuesday.
Fish from the Buford Trout Hatchery, located about a mile a half below Lake Lanier, are used to restock the river once a month during what's called "the delayed harvest." The Buford Hatchery rears brown trout and rainbow trout for the state's stockable and fingerling trout programs.
Trout from the fishery can range in size from a few inches to fish that weigh in excess of 10 pounds.
Delayed harvest streams are regularly restocked for anglers and, because the trout are caught and released, the Department of Natural Resources says catch rates remain high.
The fish are transported to the Chattahoochee in special trucks so they are not traumatized in transit. About 10 or 15 minutes after hitting the water, they're ready to be caught, according to Travis Taylor of the Department of Natural Resources.
