A Bay area high school was briefly placed on lockdown Tuesday morning because administrators had to check substances brought in for a chemistry experiment.
Initially, deputies reported that there was a chemical spill at the school, but school administrators said the school was placed on lockdown just to check the substances.
They say no chemicals were spilled. The students were encouraged to bring in a substance from the periodic table. One student brought mercury, which was contained in a thermometer, deputies said.
School officials placed the school on lockdown so they could check the substances, and then the school was given the all clear.
Sheriff's office deputies and HAZMAT crews arrived at the scene.
