New amphitheater planned at Sarasota National Cemetery

SARASOTA (FOX 13) -

A new place to honor our war heroes is in the works in Sarasota. A groundbreaking was held for a brand new amphitheater at Sarasota National Cemetery.

The amphitheater will serve as a gathering site to honor veterans. The Patterson Foundation helped fund the project.

They say it will inspire patriotism and embrace freedom.

This is the first time a private foundation has partnered with the government for a project like this, and those involved hope it's not the last.

"We're hoping that this will spread through the other 131 national cemeteries, plus we're in the process of building 18 newer national cemeteries in the next three to five years," said Steve Muro, with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Two of those are right here in Florida -- one in Tallahassee and one in Melbourne. Construction on those should start in the next couple of years.
