Bronx man accused of stealing 26 cars in 90 days

Posted: Updated:

A Bronx man is accused of stealing dozens of cars from his borough in a three month period and then selling them for scrap.

Prosecutors say that Reynaldo Nazario, 35, of West 182 St. would have the cars towed to scrap yards after stealing them.

They say that Nazario would pose as the owner of the vehicles while filling out DMV Forms which allow any person to sell a vehicle more than eight years old for scrap metal without providing a valid title.

Nazario provided his non-driver New York State Identification Card to the scrap metal yard and received approximately $350.00 for each vehicle.

All 26 cars were stolen from Bronx residents and prosecutors say most of the owners were not carrying full insurance coverage on the vehicles.

The incidents occurred between August 9th and October 23rd 2012.

NYPD had Nazario under surveillance for weeks before making the arrest.  They say that most of the sales were captured on video surveillance.

Nazario faces grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and falsifying business records charges.  He was being held on $100,000 bond and was scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, December 12, 2012.
