At age 16, a 'career criminal'

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

At just 16 years old. Larry Brown is barely able to drive a car. But records show the teen has already become a career criminal with a violent felony rap sheet dating back to when he was only 10 years old. Crimes he has been charged with include burglaries, robberies and battery.

Thursday morning he was once again in front of a judge -- this time, accused of killing CIS security officer Michael Valentin during a failed robbery attempt.

"Bottom line of this case, it's very disheartening to see a 16 year old senselessly destroy a family, take the life of an innocent hard-working man," said Tampa Police Department spokeswoman Laura McElroy.

Police say that after shooting Valentin on Thanksgiving Eve, Brown continued on a violent crime spree. They say that two days later, he committed an armed robbery at an ATM, then four days later, robbed a second one.

Police arrested him shortly after the second ATM robbery Tuesday night. They accused him of stealing a gun in Hillsborough County, and they say it's same gun that they believe killed officer Valentin. Eventually, investigators put all the puzzle pieces together and linked the teen to the crimes.

They credit witnesses, detective work and DNA analysis on Brown's bike with cracking the case.

Officer Valentin was a married father of two and came from a law enforcement background. Colleagues praised his work and are thankful the violent offender accused of killing him is finally off the streets.

Brown was denied Bond in court Thursday morning. The state attorney's office is deciding whether to charge him as an adult.

Valentin's funeral is scheduled for Friday morning at 10 a.m. at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.
