A zebra and a small horse tore down the streets of Staten Island on Wednesday morning.
The pair escaped from an enclosure behind a private home on Travis Avenue. Their owner has proper permits for the animals and has displayed them in a kind of makeshift petting zoo in the area.
Zachary Osher, of a drape and blind shop, saw the animals and recorded video of them on his phone. He shared that video with Fox 5 News.
"All of a sudden I see a pony and a zebra run by my window and I was like, 'That couldn't be what I thought it was'," Osher says.
Within a few hours, he NYPD captured the two equines and returned them to their owner, Giovanni Schirripa.
"I was cleaning out the stalls and feeding them and when I turned around, they ran out the gate," Schirripa says.
He admits that he forgot to close the gate.
Razi, the zebra, is only 4 months old. Casper, the pony, is 15 years old.
