On Tuesday night, a McDonough restaurant hosted a fundraiser to benefit the family of a Henry County police officer who was killed by a hit-and-run driver earlier this month. Officer Elgin Daniel died on November 12, and patrons packed the Sticky Cactus Mexican Grill to show support for his wife and three children.
The veteran officer was helping a stranded motorist on the side of the road when he was hit by a car. The driver of the vehicle that hit him is charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of an accident.
Nate Patel owns Sticky Cactus. He says the people who work for him never met Officer Daniel, but they wanted to honor a man who died serving his community. The restaurant donated 15 percent of all their sales on Tuesday to his family.
In addition to a percentage of the day's sales going to the Daniel family, the restaurant also held a silent auction with donated services from area businesses. All of those proceeds go toward helping the Daniel family.
Officer Daniel had been with the Henry County Police Department for two years before his death. Before that, he spent 26 years with the DeKalb County Police Department, retiring there as a lieutenant. He is survived by his wife, daughter and two sons.
