A fire displaced several people at a Gwinnett County apartment complex late on Monday night. Fire crews responded to the complex on Parton Court in Norcross at around 11:45 p.m.
According to Tommy Rutledge of the Gwinnett County Fire, three people lived in the unit where the fire broke out. He says they heard a loud crackling sound, and the power went out. They went outside and saw flames burning around a wall and a chimney.
Rutledge says when crews arrived at the scene they found smoke and flames coming from the back of the building.
Authorities say there was extensive damage to one apartment, and people in three other units not directly damaged by the fire were displaced. They say they should be able to return to their homes sometime on Tuesday.
There were no injuries.
Rutledge says the cause of the fire appears accidental, and was sparked by a fire burning in the fireplace. He says the flames apparently burned outside the fire box and traveled up the chimney to the second floor and attic.
