Jury selection begins in Dee Dee Moore trial

TAMPA (FOX 13) -

Jury selection has started in the trial of Dee Dee More, the woman accused of killing a Florida lottery winner in 2010.

Around 100 people were called to the courtroom Monday; only about 30 were questioned, and many had heard of the case.

Once the jury has been selected, prosecutors will begin laying out their case against Moore, saying she shot and killed Abraham Shakespeare and got rid of him, all for financial gain.

The trial is expected to get national attention, but perhaps no one will be watching more closely that Elizabeth Walker, his mother, who lives in Lakeland.

"Sometimes it seems like it is not real," Walker told FOX 13. "But I know it is."

Walker and Shakespeare's sister, Florestine Powell, are scheduled to take the stand.

Detectives say Moore began working with Shakespeare after telling him she wanted to write a book about him winning $17 million. He gave much of it away. Detectives say Moore took control of the rest.

Detectives suspect that after Shakespeare was murdered, Moore wanted to get close to Walker as a front. One night at dinner, Walker says Moore gave her a phone that had just rung.

"I answered the phone and said hello. He said, ‘Hey, Ma.' And I said, ‘Who is this?' He said, ‘This is Abraham.' I said, "No, you don't sound like Abraham,' " Walker recalled.

From that moment on, Walker says she began to distrust Moore. Investigators suspect the man on the phone was working with Moore, but they have never revealed who they think he might be.

Detectives say Moore lead them to the spot where Shakespeare was buried, gave them a gun believed to be the murder weapon, and offered an undercover agent $50,000 to take the blame for Shakespeare's death.

The trial is expected to last several weeks. Both Walker and Powell are scheduled to testify.
