A 56-year-old Haines City woman charged in the death of her husband made her first appearance before a judge Sunday morning in Bartow.
Sheree Hines Peters is facing one count of manslaughter, one count of tampering with evidence, one count of cocaine possession and one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.
A Polk County Circuit Court Judge set her bond at $106,500. The body of James Dennis Peters was discovered Friday on the floor of the Jennings Rd. home he shared with Sheree.
According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report deputies were dispatched to the residence after relatives became concerned for his well-being after not seeing or hearing from him in several weeks.
Investigators say the suspect gave several different reasons as to why the 62-year-old man wasn't around. Sheree Peters allegedly told folks he was at the VA Hospital, hunting in Ocala or doing yard work when anyone asked about him.
When several family members confronted her about the deceased whereabouts on Friday she got in her car and drove away. Deputies eventually caught up with her at a motel in Dundee.
At the time of her arrest Sheree Peters was in possession of cocaine.
An official cause of death has not yet been released as the investigation continues. The suspect allegedly told investigators that she and James struggled over a handgun went it went off, but so far they have not found the weapon.
During another interview with detectives Sheree James said she sold the gun in order to purchase drugs.
Deputies have responded to the Peters home a handful of times since 2006 on domestic violence calls. James had been arrested on domestic battery charges three times – June 2006, September 2009 and March 2010.
Sheree too had been arrested three times on domestic battery charges prior to her latest arrest – July 2010, September 2010 and January 2012.
