PLANT CITY (FOX 13) -

Far down Burnt Barn Ave. in rural Hillsborough County the quiet country life was replaced this weekend by the sounds of deputy's cruisers and crime scene investigators.

Late Saturday night a call came in about an unusual domestic situation involving a man, his wife and their 17-year-old son.

Hugh Williamson lives a few doors down from where a 36-year-old man was shot and killed.

"You hate to wake up and hear things like that much less in your own neighborhood," Williamson said after seeing the throng of law enforcement on his street early Sunday.

It all started at a bonfire where family and friends were hanging out at the home of Christopher and Jill Thorpe. Just before 10 p.m. the Thorpes went inside their home where an argument began.

The verbal confrontation soon turned physical as fists began to fly investigators say.

"He [Christopher Thorpe] was beating her; [he] kept punching her," said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Public Information Debbie Carter. "Then they went from the living room to master bed room where he kept beating her."

Deputies say that's when their teenage son Channing saw his father strangling his mother. At that point investigators say, the boy had apparently had enough, he grabbed a gun, pointed it in the direction of Thorpe and pulled the trigger several times.

Christopher Thorpe was pronounced dead at the scene. He died in the master bedroom of his home at the hands of his son.

Jill Thorpe, 35, suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was treated and released.

The victim and her son were back at their Plant City home Sunday morning but refused to comment on the incident.

Williamson called it a terrible tragedy.

"A very sad thing that there has to be that kind of hurt and hatred and animosity towards each other in this world," he said.

HCSO records indicate deputies have been dispatched to the home on one previous occasion, last week for a loose animal call.

The investigation continues and all information will be turned over the State Attorney's Office to see if any charges are warranted.
