Detectives with the Polk County Sheriff's Office are unraveling a mystery that began at the home of a Haines City couple with a history of domestic violence arrests.
Friday afternoon the body of 62-year-old James Dennis Peters was removed from his home in the 5500 block of Jennings Rd. in Haines City.
Sheree Hines Peters was eventually located and arrested on a variety of charges including possession of cocaine and manslaughter.
According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report family members and neighbors were kept at arm's length by the suspect when they inquired about the victim's whereabouts during the past three weeks.
Sheree Peters gave several reasons as to why her husband wasn't around.
Investigators say she told two of the couple's daughters that he was either hunting in Ocala, at the Veteran's Affairs Hospital or outside doing yard work. On Friday relatives went to the Peters residence to check on James.
When asked about her husband the suspect began acting nervous before she got in her vehicle and drove away saying she was going to get gas.
Inside the home, two of his daughters and a sister-in-law found James' decomposing remains lying on the ground covered with a sheet. When deputies finally caught up with Sheree Peters she was in possession of crack cocaine in the Dundee motel room.
The suspect has allegedly given a couple of different accounts as to how James died. In one scenario Sheree James says he was shot while they struggled over a gun but so far detectives have been unable to locate the weapon.
While undergoing a second line of questioning Sheree James told them she sold the gun in order to purchase drugs.
Both the suspect and the victim have filed domestic battery charges against the other over the past six years.
Sheree James was arrested on domestic violence charges filed by her husband in July 2010, September 2010 and January 2012.
The deceased was charged with similar crimes by Sheree James in June 2006, September 2009 and March 2010.
In addition to the drug and manslaughter charges the suspect is also charged with one count of tampering with evidence. Additional charges may be filed as the investigation continues.
The official cause of death has not been released pending the results of an autopsy.
