A Newnan family spent this Thanksgiving at Children's Hospital at Scottish Rite, but says it is the best holiday they've ever had. That's because their twin boys, born almost three months early, are beating the odds.
Vivian Salazar has two very good reasons to be thankful: Daven and Deven. One of them weighed two pounds and the other 2.8 pounds when they were born on September 22. Salazar wasn't even supposed to deliver until December 22.
"I didn't know if they were going to make it, I didn't know if they weren't. I didn't know how bad the situation was," said Salazar.
Vivian has been staying at the Ronald McDonald House with her husband since the birth of her sons.
"We had so many tubes and what they call the scuba diving gear because it because it's so much tubes for them to breathe and everything," Salazar said.
Since then, her sons have come a long way, overcoming breathing problems and cardiac issues.
"They are doing incredible…I get goosebumps. They have no breathing issues, nothing in their nose. They only have a small feeding tube because they're still so small they don't get a bottle immediately," Salazar said.
And even though they've spent their first Thanksgiving in the hospital, Vivian says it's the best holiday ever.
"To know that they're there and that we can hold them, and that they're alive and OK is the best thing," said Salazar.
Salazar said her twin boys are scheduled to come home next week. She says that is the best gift she could ever ask for and one more reason she's thankful.
