Volunteers worked feverishly on Wednesday to prepare to serve thousands of people as part of an Atlanta Thanksgiving tradition.
Hosea Feed the Hungry will serve meals all day on Thursday at the Georgia World Congress Center.
Workers turned the basement of the DeKalb County Jail biggest kitchen in town as they cooked meal for more than 16,000 people.
"About 1,000 turkeys. We're cooking stuffing, 500 pounds of stuffing. We have also beans, 500 pounds of beans," said Ed Parker, the program's chef.
Parker says volunteers are also preparing green beans, sweet potatoes, pie, rolls and cranberry sauce.
Pastor Troy Sanders of Victory Church in Stone Mountain, who suffered a massive heart attack last year, was among those assisting.
"My prayer was last year that the Lord would restore me so that I could give back to those that are less fortunate. Here I am less than a year later. I'm here for the long haul," Sanders said.
Hosea's Feed the Hungry program has helped in the metro area's needy since 1971, organizers said.
"This is the 42nd year that we have provided Thanksgiving meal for the hungry and homeless in Atlanta and I was there for the first one in 1970," said Elisabeth Omilami, the daughter of the program's founder Hosea Williams.
Omilami and her husband head up day-to-day operations at Hosea Feed the Hungry, but they say it couldn't happen without the hundreds of volunteers.
"We have so much to be thankful for and those that are less fortunate, they're certainly not less than, they're just less fortunate. We have to extend ourselves, certainly," said Sanders.
Some 11,000 meals will be served on Thursday at the Georgia World Congress Center, while another 5,000 will be delivered to people who are shut-ins, the elderly and others who can't make it to that location.
For the first time, Georgia's Department of Labor will have a number of workshops with employers on hand to help people find jobs.
