The last-minute push is on for donations at Metropolitan Ministries, as the organization tries to put as many meals on tables this Thanksgiving.
Folks were still bringing in donations Wednesday afternoon, and the organization says more is needed because so many hurting families have shown up.
expects to reach about 26,000 families this year. The lines have been steady this week.
Volunteers say the most needed items are turkeys, yams and canned fruit. Right now, 180 families per hour are coming in to pick up food – the highest rate ever.
"Our focus is to move families to self-sufficiency," said Tim Marks of Metropolitan Ministries. "That's what we really try to do. In fact, earlier on Thursday, a week ago, I had a volunteer who the year before came for services. She got a job. She's working at TECO, and she was overcome with tears because she remembered the emotions of having to come here for services. This year she was giving back."
The old location on Florida Avenue was moved into a bigger tent this year. To drop of donations, the address is at 400 West Palm in Tampa.
