Volunteers from the Meals on Wheels organization were up bright and early Tuesday morning to prepare meals for homebound seniors -- following the announcement of a large donation.
Thanks to a $50,000 donation from Sweetbay, they'll purchase a brand new delivery van, and there will be more food for our seniors this holiday season.
"A lot of time (the seniors) are people with no family," said director Steve King. "And they need just a little bit of help to stay living independently."
With the additional funds, Meals on Wheels will be able to serve 10,400 meals to elders who can't afford to purchase meals.
According to the U.S. Census, about 2,000 people in the east Tampa service area live below the poverty line.
Meals and Wheels serves more than a thousand elderly and needy families in the area.
