Investigators say Acquin failed to yield to traffic as he attempted to cross the roadway. The 61-year-old man died at the scene.
ST. PETERSBURG (FOX 13) -
A 61-year-old transient on a bicycle was struck and killed Saturday afternoon on Gandy Blvd. in Pinellas County.
Patrick Joseph Acquin was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency service personnel.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol report Acquin was heading west on his mountain sport bicycle when he failed to yield to traffic and veered in front of a 2007 Jeep Wrangler near the southbound exit ramp to Interstate 275.
The incident occurred at approximately 2:40 p.m. the report states.
The driver of the Jeep, 27-year-old Anthony Thomas Grieco of Plant City, was not injured and neither was a female passenger in the vehicle. Both were wearing seatbelts and it does not appear that alcohol played a factor in the crash.
Acquin was not wearing a helmet.
No charges have been filed as the investigation continues.
