Man stands on busy street, hoping to land jobs

Posted: Updated:

It is no easy thing to get a job right now. But a Lakeland man has come up with an unusual way to keep a roof over his head.

Several days a week, around lunchtime, Drew Broderick puts on a suit and tie, and stands on a busy street corner on South Florida Avenue holding a sign. The sign says he is a single father who needs a job and can do home repairs.

"Since I have been doing this, I have stayed busy," Broderick told FOX 13 News. "I have gotten off welfare, and I am supporting my family."

Back before the economy tanked, Broderick was doing well. Now he says he is looking for almost anything he can get.

When Tinky Parrish saw Broderick, he thought, why not give him a chance? So he did. Parrish hired Broderick to paint at Willow Oak Baptist Church where he is an associate pastor.

"He did a great job," Parrish said.

Broderick says he thinks people like his determination.

"Any help to get a job when you don't have one is great," said Debra Reynolds, who has seen Broderick standing on the corner.
