A middle school student struck by an SUV near a bus stop in Riverview has died, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
Andrea Bower, an eighth grader at Giunta Middle School, was hit at the intersection of Bloomingdale Avenue and Buckhorn Springs Road.
Deputies say Andrea missed the school bus at her regular stop. The bus usually heads further east down Bloomingdale, and then makes a loop to pick up students on the other side of the street.
Knowing that, deputies say Andrea tried to catch the bus when it picked up students on the other side of the road, and that's when she was struck by a white Ford Explorer near the Las Drisas subdivision entrance.
This all played out in front of a crowd of her peers, deputies said.
"She knew that she had to get across the street to get on her bus. She knew that she had already missed her bus," said Larry McKinnon of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. "So it's unfortunate. She didn't see it, and she got hit."
Bower died just after 5 p.m. at Tampa General Hospital. The sheriff's office said her family was with her when she passed away.
