The local FBI agent caught in the web of a sex scandal investigation that spans from South Tampa to Washington has been identified as 47-year-old Fredrick W. Humphries II.
The New York Times first reported it Wednesday.
Humphries, who lives in Hillsborough County, is the agent contacted by South Tampa socialite Jill Kelley after she allegedly received threatening emails from the woman involved in an affair with General David Petraeus, the former head of the CIA.
Humphries has been involved in some of the biggest investigations here in the Bay area.
According to the report, Humphries is the same agent who shot and killed a knife-wielding man outside of MacDill Air Force Base in May 2010, and he also played a role in the Youssef Megahed case.
It's unclear how Humphries and Kelley met, but investigators have said they are friends. According to the report, Kelley called Humphries to complain about e-mails accusing her of inappropriate behavior toward General David Petraeus.
The FBI discovered that the anonymous emails appeared to be coming from Paula Broadwell, Petraeus' mistress and his biographer. The FBI uncovered the affair between Broadwell and Petraeus, and he stepped down as head of the CIA.
There have been questions about Kelley's relationship with Humphries.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the agent sent a photo of himself, without his shirt on, to Kelley. In the New York Times report, Lawrence Berger, the general counsel for the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, said the photo had been sent years ago as a joke, and was not sexual in nature.
Humphries was cleared in the fatal shooting outside MacDill in 2010.
The FBI said at the time that the man who was shot was 61-year-old Ronald Bullock, a Vietnam veteran from Massachusetts who was staying at the base as a guest in the "family camp" area.
Bullock reportedly got into a fight and was trying to leave the base on his motorcycle when Humphries shot and killed him.
Humphries said Bullock came at him with a knife. At the time, the FBI did not identify Humphries.
