Girl Scout cookie sale aids storm relief

Girl Scouts troops in New York City will be selling cookies for one day to give to families affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The scouts will be stationed at 25 corporate offices and public venues on Monday, when schools are closed for Veterans Day.

People also can buy cookies for themselves.

Any extra money collected during the event will be donated to recovery efforts through the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.

The idea came about when after Staten Island Troop 5327 volunteered in the Ocean Breeze area of Staten Island. Many residents devastated by the storm were requesting Girl Scout cookies.

As part of the Corporate Cookie Connection program, girls will be selling all-time favorites like Samoas, Thin Mints and Trefoils in a one-day sales spree before the cookies officially go on sale in December.

In previous years, the Girl Scouts paired Corporate Cookie Connection with its Operation Cookie program, allowing customers to buy boxes of the treats and donate them to service personnel as well as local veterans' facilities, such as hospitals and nursing homes. But in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Operation Cookie will now allow New Yorkers to purchase cookies to be shared with families affected by the storm.

There's a list of locations at http://www.girlscoutsnyc.org/cookies/corporate-cookie-connection.
