NYC schools to open for all students Thursday

NEW YORK (AP) -

New York City schools will be open on Thursday for all of the city's 1.1 million students, Chancellor Dennis Walcott said.

That includes students from 43 schools that suffered damage during Superstorm Sandy last week and another 13 that still lack electricity.

Students from those 56 schools have been relocated to other schools. Most of the new school assignments started Wednesday but some won't start until Thursday.

Many students assigned to new schools because of the storm did not show up Wednesday. School officials said the average attendance among relocated students was just 43 percent. That may be due to transportation issues or, in some cases, to fears of the Nor'easter that hit the city Wednesday.

Five city high school buildings are currently serving as shelters.
