Police say an undercover detective shot and killed a suspect during a smash and grab robbery Tuesday morning in St. Petersburg.
Police said it happened at the 7-Eleven at 4th Street North and 62nd Avenue North around 1 a.m.
There have been a number of smash and grabs in the area, so undercover detectives were keeping surveillance, and they spotted the robbery in progress.
Officers surrounded the store, and a shooting broke out, detectives say.
One man, Lamont Burgess, who police say was armed with a shotgun, was killed; the other suspect, Ebony Oliver, who police say was armed with a knife, fled but was later found.
No one else was injured. The suspects have not been named at this point.
The detectives are being placed on paid administrative leave, as is the case with officer-involved shootings.
Oliver is charged with felony murder and armed robbery.
