Elderly man wanders away from home, falls into pond and drowns
Investigators with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office say the elderly man fell into this Dover pond on Friday night.
DOVER (FOX 13) -
The body of an elderly Dover man was pulled from a pond near his home early Saturday morning.
Joseph Edgar Ross, 80, was pronounced dead at the scene just after 10 a.m.
According to a Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office report the deceased lived in the Tampa East Recreational Vehicle Resort in the 4600 block of McIntosh Rd. in Dover.
Emergency service personnel were dispatched to the scene after another resident of the RV Park discovered Ross unconscious in the water. The resident told a maintenance man what he found and he called 9-1-1.
Investigators say a call from the resort came in around midnight after someone thought they heard a call for help at approximately 9:30 p.m. The calls stopped after approximately 30 minutes but the resident waited 2 ½ hours before calling for assistance.
Three deputies searched the area including the pond for 30 minutes but found nothing. Underwater vegetation filled the water making the search difficult especially in the dark.
Family members say Ross suffered from dementia and may have wandered from his home in the dark before falling into the water.
The investigation continues.
