Hundreds of people are being evacuated after a water went over a berm in a northern New Jersey town early Tuesday.

Rescue boats and various local and state agencies responded to Moonachie, Little Ferry and Carlstadt where residents were being moved to dry land.

Bergen County executive chief of staff Jeanne Baratta tells The Record newspaper the entire town of Moonachie is under water and as many as 1,000 people could need to be evacuated.

Baratta says people in a trailer park have had to climb on the roofs of their trailers to await rescue.

A Fox 5 News crew witnessed the rescue of several residents as they were brought to a parking lot where a bus was expected to bring them to a shelter.

Approximately one dozen people took cover from the rain under the awning of a laundromat as they waited for the bus.

"I'm just in a state of shock. The furniture is floating. The refrigerator tipped over. It's a mess," a Moonachie resident told Good Day NY.

"I was sleeping and somebody was knocking on the door. They told me we had ten minutes to get out," said a two-year resident of the town.

There are no reports of injuries or deaths.

Baratta says Moonachie has lost its fire department, their police department and their municipal building due to flooding.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
