Fulton County officials warned about early voting buttons

Posted: Updated:

Fulton elections officials are being warned not to break the law by handing out buttons to residents who vote early.

Voters are being given a 24-cent button that says they cast a ballot early.

Interim Elections Director Sharon Mitchell said the buttons are designed to be a conversation piece.

"It becomes a positive statement to others that you're actually participating in the process," said Mitchell.

The county's lawyer told officials to be careful how they deal with the buttons because it would be illegal for voters to receive a gift for casting a ballot. Elections officials are not allowed to use anything as an incentive to get people to vote.

Officials gave out all 6,000 of its buttons in the first few days of early voting.
