The Bay area soldier killed by a roadside bomb Saturday in Afghanistan will be brought back to the area sometime this week.
Funeral arrangements for Army Specialist Brittany Gordon, the daughter of St. Petersburg Assistant Police Chief Cedric Gordon, have not been announced yet, but her parents returned home from Dover, Delaware, Monday night.
Her body was flown to the Army base there. The Department of Defense has confirmed that she died Saturday in a roadside bomb attack in Afghanistan.
Gordon was 24.
She was supposed to be coming back home in just two months. She is the first female soldier from this area to die in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Gordon graduated from St. Petersburg High School in 2006. She was involved in the school's band and served as captain of SPHS Varsity Women's Basketball team.
After graduating, Brittany attended the University of Florida. Her family said she decided to leave school early to satisfy an urge to serve her country.
