Posted: Updated:

A 26-year-old man is in critical condition after shooting himself in a game of Russian roulette, St. Petersburg police said Monday.

The incident happened around 2 a.m. Saturday at 111032 Avenue North. Investigators say Donnie McLendon shot himself in the head while his two friends watched.

They have been identified as 22-year-old Daniel McKee and 29-year-old Thomas Rady.

Police said the three were drinking and smoking marijuana at the home when they decided to take the gun and play Russian roulette.

According to investigators, Rady and McKee went first, with the gun failing to go off. However, it went off when McLendon put the gun to his head. Rady, McKee and McKee's girlfriend took McLendon to a nearby hospital.

Initially, McKee and Rady told authorities that someone had invaded the home and shot McLendon in a robbery attempt. However, police said the story was fabricated

Right now, no charges have been filed. The investigation continues.
