DETROIT -- Chester Logan is now interim chief of the Detroit Police Department following Ralph Godbee's retirement on Monday.

"Interim Chief Logan has worked for the Detroit Police Department for 38 years.  He has been responsible for the department's day to day operations for the last two years," Mayor Dave Bing said at a press conference announcing the change.

Logan is familiar with the department, working as assistant chief of police from August of 2010 until this week.  Before that, he served as deputy chief of the Northeastern District for two years.  From 1992 until 2002, he was the commander of the 7th Precinct.

Former Police Chief Ike McKinnon knows Logan well.

"He worked the precinct for a long time, so he's (gotten) to know the patrol area much better than most.  So the officers will really love him because of his knowledge of patrol," McKinnon said.

Logan could end up spending more time as interim chief than he would like. The search for a new chief could be a long one.
