TAMPA (FOX 13) -

A Pasco County Sheriff's deputy is recovering after being attacked by a pit bull.

According to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Brent Taber is still hospitalized. He fighting an infection from the wounds, but he had no broken bones or damaged tendons.

Taber was bitten around 2:30 Sunday afternoon, and received severe lacerations to his forearm. He shot and killed the dog in self-defense, the sheriff's office said.

The attack happened Sunday afternoon around 2:30.

According to the sheriff's office, Taber stopped along Cole Avenue in Zephyrhills and got out of his car because he thought he saw someone waving him down. That turned out not to be the case, so Taber headed back to his patrol car.

As he was returning to the car, the dog got loose and attacked him. Taber was taken to Tampa General Hospital.

The dog's owner was cited for failure to contain the animal properly.
