Winter Haven man critical after hit-and-run accident

Posted: Updated:

A 46-year-old Winter Haven man is in critical condition after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bike.

Terry Ross was trying to cross Highway 17 at Ave. D, NW when he went into the path of a Cadillac CTS.

Detectives say the driver, John Hamed, did not have time to swerve out of the way, hitting Ross and throwing him into the windshield. But then they say he left the scene, leaving the passenger of the car, 23-year-old Ryan Narthey, to assist Ross.

Ross was rushed to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with head injuries, and he's listed in critical condition.

Police tracked Hamed down at his home and later arrested him on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury.
