INVERNESS (FOX 13) -
An off-duty deputy shot and killed a sex offender Wednesday night during an
apparent break-in.
Deputies said the man was trying to burglarize the deputy's home on Eden
Drive in Inverness, and the deputy fatally shot him after a confrontation.
The two men knew each other, the sheriff's office said, and the break-in was
not random. The deputy was in the residence with his girlfriend at the time.
The man who was killed has been identified as 28-year-old Derrick Vaccianna
of Hernando. He was on probation as a registered sex offender at the time, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities are investigating the incident, and more information will be
release later.
The deputy has not been identified.
