Thieves target cars at Siesta Key Beach

SARASOTA (FOX 13) -

Sarasota deputies arrested two men they say broke into a car at Siesta Key Beach, stole credit cards, and used those cards to make high-dollar purchases.

The arrests come after a string of car break-ins at the beach.

According to the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office, 47-year-old Carmelo Curbelo and 35-year-old Rene Sanchez are in custody.

Investigators say they stole two credit cards and two cell phones from the car on Tuesday. The victim called police to say her cards had been used at a Best Buy and a Walmart in Sarasota.

The stores were able to provide receipts and video of one of the suspects buying an iPad.

The suspects returned to the store a short time later, and employees were able to recognize them, and get their car and tag information.

Deputies found the car, stopped it and arrested the two men. They are now charged with theft and fraudulent use of a credit card, among other charges.

There were two other car break ins at Siesta Key Beach Tuesday; investigators are working to determine if they are related.
