A Hillsborough County deputy shot and killed a man outside a home in Tampa.
It happened around 3 a.m. at 1003 Turner Road. According to the sheriff's office, the man was armed with a gun and was threatening suicide.
Deputies came to the home, and a short time later the man walked out armed with the gun. In fear of his life, deputy Duane Benton shot him.
He was taken to Tampa General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Deputies have identified him as 66-year-old George Louis Garrett of Palm River.
The sheriff's office says Benton, 44, is assigned to the district 2 patrol division. He is a 16-year veteran.
