Newnan horse rescue in need of aid

NEWNAN, Ga. -

A Coweta County couple who have come to the rescue of dozens of horses is now in need of some help of their own.

Diane Walker has taken in horses from distressed families who can no longer afford to care for them.

"They couldn't feed them," said Walker.

Walker has also adopted hopeless race horses that were headed to the slaughter house. Combined with her own horses, she now has 50.

Everything was fine, until her husband had a stroke this year and at the age of 70 was forced into retirement.

"We can right now take care of the hay and the feed and the vet bills...but it's mainly, some of these horses are getting old and the winter time is hard on them," said Walker.

Many of the horses were brought to her in poor health. Dianne needs help in providing them shelter this winter.

Friend Jennifer Merfalen, a school teacher, is collecting donated supplies to build what are called "run-in shelters."

"So ideally, we would like to get lumber donation from any of the construction companies or anything like that," said Merfalen.

Lowes has donated concrete, and volunteers are standing by to help build the shelter, but there is still desperate need for the more building materials to help shelters the horse until Dianne can find permanent homes for the rescued animals.

"But in the meantime, while they are here, they need that shelter from the elements," said Merfalen.

A run-in shelter is simply a three sided building. It doesn't require a lot. They need to build eight.
