An envelope containing a "dark powdery substance" was delivered to the Criminal Courts Complex in Clearwater Monday, but firefighters say tests show it was probably not hazardous.
According to investigators, a clerk on the second floor of the Criminal Justice Center was sorting mail when she opened a letter containing a dark powdery substance. The letter was not directed to a specific individual, but contained threatening remarks to court staff in general.
In an abundance of caution, deputies evacuated the immediate area and shut off air vents to prevent it from spreading.
Preliminary tests at the scene later determined the substance was not hazardous, though it was not immediately clear exactly what the substance was.
The origin of the letter was also not clear. The incident remains under investigation.
