Pilot killed in crash at Hernando County Airport

BROOKSVILLE (FOX 13) -

A 50-year-old pilot from Spring Hill was killed Sunday morning shortly after taking off from the Hernando County Airport in Brooksville.

Detectives say Christopher Ambrose Washington was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a Hernando County Sheriff's Office report the incident occurred just after 11:30 a.m. A witness reported seeing the ultra-light aircraft take off from the north end of the airport.

Once it reached approximately 200 feet in the air it appeared to be struggling. It stalled and then spiraled to the ground. The aircraft burst into flames upon impact the report states.

Pasco deputies and emergency service personnel reached the crash site at the southeast portion of the airport.

The official cause of the crash is under investigation.
