Deputies in Pasco County have arrested a 45-year-old Spring Hill man and are on the lookout for a second suspect in connection with the overnight burglary of a K-Mart location in Hudson.
Claude Jay Swick was captured after the getaway truck crashed on Beacon Woods Dr. just before 2 a.m. Sunday morning.
He tried to flee on foot but didn't make it far.
The suspect was booked into the Land O' Lakes detention center where he is being held on a bond of $10,000. Swick was charged with one count of burglary of a structure. Additional charges may be filed.
Investigators say the U-Haul truck contained approximately $6,000 worth of merchandise taken from the retail outlet at 12412 US Highway 19.
According to a Pasco County Sheriff's Office report deputies were dispatched to the store just after 1 a.m. When they arrived all the doors to the business were secured but a manager reported seeing an unidentified person inside.
When a K-9 Unit arrived they witnessed the U-Haul truck pulling away. It rolled over not far from the store. Investigators believe Swick, who is no stranger to law enforcement, had help from at least one other person.
No description is available on the second person.
Detectives believe the second person hid in the store until after closing. After moving some items to the back door he called Swick, who allegedly brought the truck to the location.
The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. The suspect has four prior arrests in Pasco County since 2010. Swick's prior charges include marijuana possession, retail theft, false imprisonment, utility theft and domestic battery.
