Under-pressure home builders petitioning for compromise

Posted: Updated:

When Vivian Balocchi looks at the outside walls of her home, there are problems.

"We're seeing a lot of moisture issue around the property," she said.

That's not all.  There's bubbling stucco.  Other condos have cracks and mold, too.  It's not so great for a property built in 2004.

"For a few years we tried to get in contact with KB Home to fix the situation, and we were not getting too far," Balocchi said.

KB Homes built Waterford Condominiums in Clearwater.

"I think because other units have come forward, other people that have the same issues now we're in the limelight also," explained Patty McCormick.

The property has many of the same problems as Willowbrook in Manatee County.

People who live in both places miles apart blame the same builder, KB Home, for what they call sub-standard construction.

They want repairs and in some cases buy backs.

Last month, home owners lashed out in a public meeting.

"Frustration is an understatement. You feel like nothing's being done. No one is helping," said Dan Koehler.

After their story aired, KB Home came knocking on the doors of residents in Clearwater.

Now, a change of tune.

"We talked to them and they went building by building.  Personally, my opinion, it came out in a very positive feedback.  The way it sounded it sounds like they are going to be doing their part in taking care of the matter," Balocchi said.

KB Home released this statement:

"KB Home had a very productive meeting in the community yesterday with residents of Waterford, board members and a licensed contractor to inspect the homes and develop the repair protocol.  We continue to be committed to make the necessary repairs and we look forward to proceeding immediately with the repair process."

"We feel that they're willing to work with us, and we just want to work with them.  We just want our building repaired and it seems to be where we're heading," McCormick said.

But how soon?  That's the unanswered question.

It will take time.  This is a problem experienced by potentially dozens of property owners and some say they will believe in the repairs when they see them.
