Describing Guy Harvey is no easy task. Tenth generation English Jamaican, marine fisheries scientist, world-class artist, and a conservationist with deep pockets, thanks to widely-marketed apparel, art, books and videos.
That cash flow helped him form the Guy Harvey Research Institute at Ft. Lauderdale's Nova Southeastern University and his own Guy Harvey Ocean Foundation.
"We're into the research aspect, the fishing, the diving, the conservation, the story-telling. We make documentaries, we involve a lot of school kids in the curricula that we help build," Harvey said Wednesday.
After just returning from a fishing trip, of course, with a new business partner: TradeWinds Island Resorts general manager Keith Overton.
"I'm normally an offshore guy, but we had a fantastic time today," Harvey said. "I've never had so many bites in an hour in my life, I don't think, and they were great big size red fish."
Overton confirmed dozens of catches, then revealed the reason for the new business relationship: "It's an incredible fishery here, but not many people know about it, and they don't think about it as a destination driven by fishing," he said.
Part of the TradeWinds has now been re-branded a "Guy Harvey Outpost," featuring his name and his art throughout the property. It is Harvey's second attempt to pair his brand with a family friendly, conservation-minded resort featuring excellent fishing and diving opportunities. The first attempt, on a remote island, failed.
"The one in Bimini was the first one, and it worked extremely well up to a point. And we just got to a difficult position with the owner and said we've had enough, so let's go," Harvey explained.
The TradeWinds will live with the same possibility, but Overton is not worried. His property is already "green" in many respects and actively supports local environmental and charitable causes.
"We believe that business model is more successful than by not being socially responsible," Overton said. "People are starting to follow organizations' behavior and they're making decisions based on it."
Harvey said he will promote the TradeWinds and the fishing in the Tampa Bay area through his television show and his social media outlets.
