Task force expresses support for 'Stand your Ground' law

Posted: Updated:

Members of a task force reviewing Florida's "Stand your Ground" law are expressing support for the statute's core provision that deadly force can be used if necessary to prevent death or serious injury.

In a meeting in West Palm Beach on Wednesday, members of the Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection voiced strong approval of the notion that citizens have no duty to retreat if seriously threatened.

The committee is holding a series of meetings around the state in advance of making recommendations to Gov. Rick Scott and the Legislature about possible changes to the law.

Opponents of the law, including the parents of a young man who say it kept their son's killer from being charged, have called for its overhaul or repeal.
