Many of the people who paid their respects at a Long Island 9/11 ceremony included prayers for service men and women overseas.

Hundreds attended the event Tuesday at Point Lookout Beach in Hempstead.

Many stood in the sand.

Residents wrote messages and names of 9/11 victims on a panorama of the New York City skyline.

Levittown Fire Commissioner John Rottkamp remembered Fire Chief Ronald Cohen, who also was an FDNY lieutenant.

Rottkamp says Cohen was a great family man and a great fireman -- and he considers that the highest kind of honor.

"It's very solace. It brings me comfort to be here with these people," Rottkamp told Good Day NY.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
