You never know when and where a hero will emerge. A man Thursday ran to the rescue of a little boy who was wandering in the middle of an intersection in only a diaper.
It happened in Winter Haven, and the man who was supposed to be watching the 2-year-old boy, Isaiah McGriff, is now being charged with child neglect, police say.
"A work of the Lord, for me to be coming through at that time," said Deacon Rodney Smith of the Greater New Hope Annointed Ministries, who just happened to be driving a little earlier than normal to work Thursday morning when he saw something in his headlights.
"I couldn't tell at first that it was a baby until I got close, and I said, ‘Jesus Christ this is a baby out here,'" said Smith.
Police say McGriff had a bad lock on his front door and new about it, and police say that's how the child got out. But fortunately, Smith swooped in to rescue the child as he saw him crossing the intersection of Dundee Road and Buckeye Loop Road.
Police say the boy got about a quarter mile from his home.
"The child was right here in the middle, and I left my car right there, told the child to come to me," said Smith.
The boy was unharmed in the incident. He's now back in the custody of his mother.
McGriff will make his first appearance in court Friday.
